Women's Tennis Opens Action at MAAC Championships Saturday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield women’s tennis team is on their way to compete in the 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship this weekend at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. The Stags finished the regular season with an overall record of 7-7, and a conference 10:00 a.m. during Saturday’s semifinal round.

This is the second consecutive time that the two teams will meet in the semifinal round. In the MAAC semifinals last year, second-seeded Fairfield defeated third-seeded Niagara, 4-1, on April 26. The Stags also defeated the Purple Eagles in the 2009 MAAC Championship. During the 2015 regular season, Fairfield fell to Niagara (10-7; 7-1 MAAC), 5-2, at home on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.

Fairfield’s singles and doubles play has helped them earn their eighth consecutive MAAC Championship berth. The Stags finished 33-15 in conference singles play, with standouts Allison Radde and Helen Abbot posting 6-2 MAAC records. Heading into the tournament, Nicole Aragones and Karen McKeough lead the team with three-match win streaks. In doubles play, the Stags posted a 16-8 conference record.  Standout duo of Radde and Abbot posted a 4-0 mark in the No. 1 spot and are currently on a five-match win streak. In the No 3 spot, duo McKeough and Meghan Zimmer recorded a 3-0 conference record and are on a seven-match win streak heading into the tournament.

Last season, Fairfield earned the No. 2 seed in the 2014 MAAC Tournament. They defeated Niagara, 4-1, in the semifinal match before falling to top-seeded Quinnipiac, 4-1, in the championship match.

Top-seeded Quinnipiac (12-8; 8-0 MAAC) will take on fourth-seeded Marist (5-12; 5-3 MAAC) in the other semifinal match on Saturday. The winners of the two semifinal matches will face one another in the Championship on Sunday, April 26.
