FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team fell to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Niagara, 5-2, on Saturday, April 11 at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
The Fairfield duo of Allison Radde and Helen Abbot defeated Niagara’s Maria Ortiz and Paulina Velasquez, 8-5, in the No. 1 slot. Stags pair Sarah Stuhlmann and Kaila Nelson were edged, 8-3, by Brooke Briseno and Stella Peisakhova in the No. 2 slot while Meghan Zimmer and Karen McKeough downed the Purple Eagles’ Iva Celan and Ashely Ta by a count of 8-3.
The Stags posted a singles victory in the No. 1 slot where Radde topped Celan, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles was Stuhlmann who fell to Ta by a count of 6-3, 6-4, while classmate Nicole Aragones was edged by Niagara’s Velasquez, 7-6(5), 6-2, in the No. 3 spot. At No. 4 was Abbot who fell 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, to Peisakhova while Nelson was clipped, 6-0, 0-6, 6-3, by Ortiz at No. 5. Rounding out play for Fairfield was Zimmer, who fell 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.
Fairfield (5-6; 4-2 MAAC) is scheduled to continue action at home. The Stags are slated to host cross-town foe Sacred Heart on Monday, April 13 before taking conference play on the road to Manhattan on Wednesday, April 15.
