FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball continued action at Leo D. Mahoney Arena with a 3-1 win over Brown on Friday evening as a part of the Fairfield Invitational. The Stags were led by 16 kills from
Emma Bortolotti and 11 by
Mamie Krubally.
Fairfield improved to 2-0 on the weekend and 6-4 overall this season. Brown dropped to 1-5 with the loss. The Stags took the contest by set scores of 25-20, 25-17, 21-25, and 25-18.
"This match was about making adjustments and counter-adjustments," said Head Coach
Nancy Somera. "Brown really picked it up in Set 3, and we had to react to their adjustments, and I was happy with how we did that to come back and win Set 4 to close it out.
Bortolotti led all players with 16 kills and posted a match-high 13 digs for her second double-double for the weekend. The sophomore right side hit .344 for the contest and also contributed four blocks and an ace to the scoring effort.
Also on the right side, Krubally hit an even .500 without an error for the second consecutive day. This time, she put down 11 kills on 22 attempts and matched Bortolotti with four blocks.
Filling out the kills column for the Stags were
Aislin Oldach with nine,
Harlan Wyche with six at a .364 clip,
Sophia Nagy and
Mia Jean Claude with three apiece, and
Zofia Sykut with one from the setter spot.
Sykut also piloted the attack with 26 digs, while
Noella Migliuri dished out 18. Fairfield hit .212 for the match bolstered by a .324 hitting percentage in the opening frame.
At the net, Fairfield racked up 12 blocks. Wyche had a hand in seven of those rejections to improve her conference-leading average to 1.37 blocks per set. Bortolotti, Krubally, and Nagy each had a hand in four Stags' blocks.
Bortolotti's 13 digs made her one of three Stags to reach double digits in the back row.
Katelyn Cook picked up 11 from the libero spot, and Oldach notched 10.
Brown was led by 13 kills from Fisayo Afonja and a seven-kill, eight-block outing for All-Ivy middle Sophia Wolfson.
Action at the Fairfield Invitational concludes on Saturday when the Stags host Middle Tennessee at 3 p.m. The day will also feature Middle Tennessee challenging Brown at 11 a.m. and the Bears returning to meet CCSU at 5 p.m.
