FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team completed their first series sweep of the season as they took down the Manhattan Jaspers with a 7-3 victory at Don and Chris Cook Field.
Jack Sheldon picked up his first win of the season with four shutout innings of relief while
Luke Nomura paced the offense with three hits and three RBI. The victory was also Fairfield's fifth-straight and puts their MAAC record to 4-2.
"I think the key to the game was Sheldon coming in and throwing four innings in the middle of the game to quiet things down and give us a chance to get the lead back," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "Luke had the big clutch hit to put the space between us and them at the end."
The Stags rallied from two runs down to start the game as they plated two in the bottom of the first.
Jake Haarde had the game-tying hit with a RBI single through the left side.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Fairfield would once again plate a pair of runs.
Matthew Bucciero broke the tie with a triple to the right center field gap. The three-bagger was the 12th of his career as he breaks the program's all-time career record. He is now one base shy of tying the career total base record as well.
Nomura followed Bucciero's big hit with a single through the left side to put the score at 5-3.
Shledon would silence the Manhattan bats for the next four frames, allowing just three hits during that span. He struck out a batter in the seventh and picked off a runner at first in the eighth to preserve the lead.
Nomura gave the Stags some breathing room in the bottom half of the eighth with a two-run double down the left field line. In total, Nomura had three hits and another double robbed with a great jumping catch in left.
Jimmy Mulvaney got the final three outs preserving Fairfield's sweep.
Jake Haarde followed Nomura with two hits including a double and RBI.
The Stags will stay home hosting a pair of midweek contests starting with a visit from NJIT on Tuesday at 3pm.
