Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Fairfield University softball dropped its final game at the Terrapin Invitational on Sunday, falling to UMBC by a 15-4 count.
The Stags scored all four of their runs in their last at-bat, turning a pair of walks, a fielding error, and a bases-clearing double to send runners across home plate.
Ava Armuth opened the inning by earning a walk before taking second base on fielder's choice. After a fielding error loaded the bases,
Alivia Macaluso brought home the team's first run by drawing a walk.
Evelyn Wozniak completed the rally with her three-run double to finalize the scoring.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie through the first two innings before the Retrievers were able to push across the game's first run by stringing together four singles. UMBC added two more runs in the fourth inning with a pair of walks and a two-run, two-out single that brought the score to 3-0.
The Retrievers put the game out of reach in the fifth inning, scoring 12 runs off five hits including a grand slam from Taylor Nicholson and three runs crossing the plate via walk and hit batter.
Fairfield finished the game with five hits with
Delaney Whieldon leading the way by stroking two hits including a double.
The Stags will return to Connecticut with four games on the docket for the upcoming week. Fairfield will travel to Central Connecticut State University on Wednesday, March 4 before opening Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play over the weekend. The team will host Marist University for a pair of games on Saturday and a single contest on Sunday afternoon.
