ELON, N.C. – The Elon Phoenix scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit and upend the Fairfield University Baseball team in the first game of a three-game series.
Luke Nomura was the offensive highlight with a solo homer in the top of the third while
Ben Alekson shutdown Elon through six one-hit innings. The two teams will play the middle game of the series tomorrow at 1pm.
Nomura's solo blast was the lone run in the game through the first seven frames until
Connor Scanlan added a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Alekson dueled with Elon's Brian Strange as the right-hander tossed six one-hit frames while striking out five. He ended his outing with a strikeout looking in the sixth to keep the score at 1-0. Through his first 16 innings of the season, Alekson has still not allowed an earned run with a 1.13 WHIP and a .211 opponents' batting average.
The Stags held the lead until the bottom of the ninth when Elon loaded the bases and tied the game on back-to-back hit batters before Gar Hindle walked the game off with a single.
Fairfield tallied six hits from six different hitters.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1pm.
