BALTIMORE — Fairfield University Women's Tennis earned its first head-to-head win of the spring with a 4-2 victory over host Towson on Friday at the Coppermine Racquet & Fitness Club in Baltimore. The Stags secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions and clinched the match with singles wins in the top three flights.
After the Tigers took the No. 1 doubles match, 6-2, the Stags rallied to earn the pivotal point.
Victoria Mandma and
Dylin Pizzutello claimed a 6-4 win over Towson's Aubrey Carper and Tamzin Pountney at No. 3, and the clincher came from
Maria Gell and
Anna Neyestani with a tightly contested 7-6 (5) win at No. 2 against Gaia Montecchi and Ashira Murray.
In singles, Towson again took an early lead with Tamzin Pountney's 6-0, 6-3 victory over
Nicolette Loeffler at No. 4 singles. Neyestani leveled the score for Fairfield by winning 7-5, 6-2 against Boshoff at No. 3 singles. Towson regained the lead when Murray defeated
Lily Malinowski 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Fairfield's Mandma then responded at No. 1 with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) triumph over Tambe to bring the Stags within one point of victory at 3-2.
Sophia Harris clinched the match for the Stags at No. 2 in a marathon tiebreaker, taking a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (14-12) win over Montecchi.
"That was unbelievable resilience from the whole team," said Head Coach
Jeff Bricker. "In a match where every point mattered, Victoria and Sophia had clutch performances in singles, and Anna and Maria were equally clutch in doubles. A great team win!"
The No. 6 singles match between
Maeve Cassidy and Carper remained unfinished tied at 5-5 in the first set.
The Stags return to action next Saturday, Feb. 21, against Bryant at Rally Point Racquet Club in Greenville, R.I.
