CONWAY, S.C. – The Fairfield University Baseball team was swept in a Saturday doubleheader as the National Champions Runners Up Coastal Carolina completed the series sweep with scores of 5-1 and 5-0.
Game One: Coastal Carolina 5, Fairfield 1
The Chanticleers scored all five of their runs in the second and third innings highlighted by a pair of two-run homers.
Fairfield got their lone run in the fourth on a
Liam McIlroy run scoring single that plated
TJ Schmalzle who reached scoring position with a one-out double.
The Stags got a pair of runners on in the seventh with
Connor Scanlan and
Jake Haarde reaching on an error and a walk.
Nolan Colby sacrificed both runners into scoring position, but Coastal was able to get back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
The Fairfield bullpen combined for 5.2 scoreless frames, highlighted by a four inning, two-hit performance by
Hunter Hoxie.
Ryan Maiorano followed with 1.2 innings allowing just one hit.
The Stags tallied five hits in the setback with Scanlan and Schmalzle each picking up a pair.
Game Two: Coastal Carolina 5, Fairfield 0
The Chanticleers scored all five of their runs in the sixth inning after being shut down by
Devin Wolff for the first four frames. Wolff surrendered just three hits while striking out two in his Fairfield debut.
Coastal Carolina got on the board with a bases clearing triple, followed by a RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
The Stags got some traffic on the bases in the seventh with
Luke Nomura drawing a walk and
Matthew Bucciero singling through the right side. The Chanticleers would get the final out with a fly ball to end the mini threat.
Will Youngman tossed 2.1 hitless innings in relief with
Harrison Engle getting the final out.
Fairfield will be back in action when they travel to Davidson for a three-game series next weekend.
