Field Hockey Garners Third Straight Win At William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Fairfield University field hockey team picked up its third straight shutout with today's 5-0 win over the College of William & Mary. The Stags scored in all four quarters including a pair of goals in the second period.

Fairfield offense was efficient with its attack, putting 14 of their 16 shots on goal. The team's back line was equally successful in keeping the home team away from danger, allowing just five shots and only two on goal. Five different student-athletes scored in the match, including Bryn Andres who tallied her first career goal.

The Stags opened the scoring in the 12th minute of play with the scoring chance starting off a penalty corner. Alice Pifferi inserted the ball where Alyse Wanchisen secured the ball and put a shot on goal. Goalkeeper Alexandra de Jesus made the initial stop but the ball came back to Pifferi who finished the play with the goal.

The team took control of the game in the second quarter, putting two more scores on the board less than 80 seconds apart. The team's second goal of the match came in the 17th minute when the Stags earned another penalty corner. The insertion went to Rylee LaLoup who sent the ball over to Kaelyn Fogleson for the finish.

The next goal came just over a minute later when Alice Pifferi set up Noor Hellemans for the goal, the senior's second goal of the season, the first of two shots taken by the visitors in the third quarter.

Fairfield needed just seconds at the start of the second half to pad its lead with the team's fourth goal. Kylie Corcoran tallied her eighth goal of the campaign courtesy of a pass from Alice Pifferi. The assist was Pifferi's eighth of the season which increased her career total to 28, giving her the top spot on the career list.

The Stags opened the fourth quarter with an offensive flurry, earning three penalty corners in the first couple of minutes. The first two corners resulted in a shot from Corcoran and Catalina Ness, both of which required a save from de Jesus. Less than a minute after the last corner, Ness was able to set up Andres at the top of the circle who finished the game's scoring with her inaugural goal.

Paige Jackson played all 60 minutes in the Fairfield goal, making two saves to gather the clean sheet. de Jesus ended the afternoon with nine saves as she faced 16 shots.

Fairfield will finish its weekend trip to Virginia on Sunday when it heads to VCU for a 1 pm match.
