Field Hockey Falls To Providence In Overtime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Fairfield University field hockey team came up a goal short in a 4-3 overtime decision, ending the team's six-game winning streak. The Stags played their second consecutive overtime match, defeating #20 Monmouth last Friday.

Providence scored quickly to grab early control of the match, beginning with Bo Martina's goal in the ninth minute. The scoring opportunity started with the team's second penalty corner, setting up the early goal.

Just three minutes later, the Friars doubled its advantage after Florencia Talarico converted a penalty stroke. The stroke was the first one whistled against the Stags this year as compared to Fairfield's five penalty stroke goals in 2026.

The Stags were able to put their first goal on the scoreboard in the second quarter courtesy of Konni Hofmann who finished for her fourth goal of the season. The scoring play culminated a run of three consecutive shots by the senior which occurred a three-minute span.

The Friars regained their two-goal advantage early in the third quarter when Talarico tallied her second goal of the game just three minutes into the second half.

The lead was dropped to a goal later in the quarter when Fairfield was awarded a penalty corner with three minutes left in the period. Hadley Hoffsmith set up the goal when she sent the ball toward goal, allowing Catherine Fitzgerald to redirect the ball into the goal to bring the score to 3-2.

The game appeared to be in hand for Providence as the closing minutes ticked away in the fourth quarter with the Friars still up a goal. Fairfield rallied for the second straight game with a late goal to tie the score and send the match into overtime.

With under a minute remaining, Kaelyn Fogelson collected a long pass from midfield and brought the ball back into the circle. She was able to send a cross to the middle of the circle where Camille Perlov was able to push the cross past the goalkeeper to bring the score to 3-3 with 51 seconds on the clock.

In the overtime period, Providence was able to keep play on the Fairfield side of the pitch, earning a penalty corner that set up two unsuccessful shots two minutes into extra time. Four minutes later, the Friars secured another penalty corner opportunity but this time Martina was able to convert the chance into the game-winning goal.

Fairfield held a slight edge in shots with by a 15-13 margin with 11 of those attempts coming after halftime. Goalkeeper Georgia McDade made three saves for the Stags.

The Stags will finish up the regular season on Friday when they travel to UConn for an afternoon match against the nationally-ranked Huskies. Game time is 3 pm.
