QUEENS, N.Y. — Fairfield University Women's Tennis fell to host St. John's, 4-0, on Friday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens.
St. John's secured the doubles point to take an early lead. Alicia Gomez and Abi Redman achieved a 6-2 result at No. 3 doubles over
Maeve Cassidy and
Nicolette Loeffler. Following this, Noemi Babikova and Victor Papadopoulou clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles against
Maria Gell and
Victoria Mandma. The match at No. 2 doubles, featuring the Stags'
Sophia Harris and
Sarah Liu against Nao Kojima and Nicoline Sartz-Lunde, was left unfinished with Harris and Liu on the brink of a victory, holding a 5-2 advantage.
In singles, Victor Papadopoulou added the first singles point for St. John's with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over
Anna Neyestani at No. 1 singles. Noemi Babikova followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Mandma at No. 2 singles. Nao Kojima then secured the decisive fourth point for St. John's, defeating Harris 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. The remaining matches featuring
Regina Herrera at No. 4 singles, Loeffler at No. 5 singles, and Cassidy at No. 6 singles were left unfinished, with the home team having already clinched the match.
Fairfield Women's Tennis returns to the courts tomorrow – Saturday, Jan. 31 – when they host Rhode Island indoors at the Tennis Club of Trumbull at 6 p.m.
