TRUMBULL, Conn. — Fairfield University Women's Tennis fell to the University of Rhode Island, 5-2, on Saturday at the Tennis Club of Trumbull in the Stags' indoor home opener. Rookies
Sophia Harris and
Regina Herrera both earned singles wins for Fairfield.
"This was long and challenging first week playing three matches in four days," said head Coach
Jeff Bricker. "We played our best tonight and showed a championship-level competitiveness against URI. It's still early, but the sky is the limit for this group if they continue to develop and work hard daily."
Harris and
Sarah Liu secured a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, but the Rams took the point with wins at the first and third flights.
Maria Gell and
Victoria Mandma faced a setback at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, while
Meg Harding and
Anna Neyestani were on the short side of a 7-5 count at No. 3.
In singles play, Herrera delivered a victory at No. 3 singles, winning in straight sets 7-6 (2), 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Harris went to three games to take the victory, 7-6 (4), 4-6, and 7-5.
Three more Stags pushed their matches to three sets –
Victoria Mandma at No. 1,
Lily Malinowski at No. 4, and Nicollette Loeffler at No. 5. But URI claimed all three matches as well at the No. 6 contest to seal the 5-2 victory.
Fairfield Women's Tennis is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Army West Point.
