MANCHESTER, Conn. — Fairfield University Women's Tennis (0-1) fell to host UConn (1-0) by a 7-0 count on Wednesday at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club in Manchester. UConn secured the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches and swept all six singles matches.
UConn secured the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. Victoria Matos and Ela Platenikova defeated the Stags'
Maria Gell and
Victoria Mandma, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles. Chloe Lomans and Madison McLeod clinched the point with a 6-2 triumph over
Sophia Harris and
Regina Herrera at No. 2 doubles. The match at No. 3 doubles between
Lily Malinowski and
Anna Neyestani and their UConn opponents was left unfinished at 4-2.
In singles, UConn swept all six matches. Platenikova won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, against Neyestani. Cameron Didion added another point for UConn with a 6-1, 6-3 result over Herrera at No. 4 singles. McLeod followed suit, defeating
Nicolette Loeffler, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 singles in the clincher.
Lomans extended UConn's lead with a straight-set victory over Mandma, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 2 singles. Matos held off Harris in a three-set battle at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. The final point came at No. 6 singles, where Isabella Asenov outlasted Malinowski in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7).
Another Big East opponent is on deck for the Stags on Friday, Jan. 30 when they travel to the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens to meet St. John's.
