FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer senior
Emilie Cooked struck the eventual game-winning goal in the 73rd minute and the Stags recorded their fourth shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Siena on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Stags extend their home winning streak to 21-straight games, increasing the longest active home winning streak in the country.
"A very good effort from our group," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "I thought we should have had a goal or two in the first half and that would have changed the narrative of the game. Siena were tough to break down and it took a really good strike from Emile to unlock them."
Despite 37 combined shots, Cook's long-range tally midway through the second half was the only attempt to touch the back of the net. Cook took a pass from
Ashley McMahon on the near side of the team bench and looped her shot over the Siena goalkeeper for her first score of the season. The helper for McMahon was her third of the season and the sixth-straight match she has recorded at least one point.
The Stags tallied 26 of the match's 37 shots with 13 coming in each half.
Payton Zaun had the best chance in the second half but her right-footed strike was stopped by a diving save from Siena's Cate Burns.
Looking for the equalizer, Siena tallied the final three shots of the match but none found the face of the net. Briana Neary and Micaiah Croce both had chances in the box but both attempts went high over the post.
Siena's Burns was credited with five saves while
Katie Wright made two in her 21st career shutout. She also increased her career win total to 48 victories and is one shy of tying the program's all-time mark set nearly two decades ago.
Maddy Theriault led all players with five shots with a pair making it all the way to Siena's goalkeeper.
Sam Kersey tallied four attempts with McMahon and
Ashlyn Walsh both notching three.
Fairfield improves their overall record to 8-1-1 and 3-0-1 in the MAAC. The Stags have also now won 29 of their last 37 conference matches. They extend their winning streak on Lessing Field to 21-straight wins, the longest active home winning streak in the country.
The Stags will be back on Lessing Field on Wednesday night when they host Marist at 7pm. The match will also be Fairfield's Herd for the Cure game with proceeds going to the Norma Pfriem Breast Center.
