FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Despite taking 30 shots, the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team could not find the back of the net as the Stags drew with Marist 0-0 on Wednesday night.
Ashlyn Walsh and
Maddy Theriault combined for 13 of those shots with
Katie Wright making five saves in net.
Fairfield (8-1-2; 3-0-2 MAAC) took a season-high 30 attempts in the match with eight of those on target. Theriault had the first big chance for the Stags but her shot hit off the top post early in the first half.
Brooke Walonis put her attempt on net that forced a defensive save from the Red Foxes, the first of two saves from the defensive unit.
Brooke Kennedy also ripped a shot in the 33rd minute that Marist's goalkeeper Maddy Catalanotti stopped with a fully extended dive to her right.
The Stags took 19 shots in the first half but it was Marist who had the first good chance in the second stanza. Gabby Tirado got behind the defense and her high shot was hit over the crossbar by Wright, her most impressive save of the night.
Off a corner kick in the 66th minute, Walsh forced another defensive save by the Red Foxes and the rebounded shot by
Ashley McMahon was off the mark.
Walsh had the last chance for the Stags, taking two shots in the final 12 minutes but both were stopped by Catalanotti.
In total, Catalanotti made six saves for the Red Foxes with the defensive unit stopping two more. Wright made five saves in net for the Stags in posting her fifth shutout of the campaign.
Fairfield out-shot Marist 30-7 and had a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Stags will hit the road to Buffalo, N.Y., to face Canisius on Saturday at noon.
