Stags Remain Unbeaten in MAAC with Win at Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team remained unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play with a 2-1 win over Canisius on Saturday afternoon. Ashley McMahon and Jess Lynskey scored the goals for the Stags while Katie Wright picked up her 49th career win in net, tying the all-time program record. With the victory, the Stags earn their ninth of the season and improve their conference mark to 4-0-2, moving to third in the conference table.

"I thought scoring an early goal was important for us today to give us some confidence," Head Coach David Barrett said. "We created plenty of other good looks as well and many fewer were blocked or off target. We fell asleep on their goal, and gave them some hope. We obviously need to still clean up some things but happy to get three points today.

The Stags scored both of their goals in the first half with McMahon starting the scoring with a one-timer off a rebound in the seventh minute. Her goal was her fifth of the season and she has now recorded a point in seven of her last eight outings. She is second on the team with 13 points on the year.

Lynskey doubled the Fairfield advantage with her first career goal when Taylor deVos sent a long ball into the box that the Canisius keeper got a foot on but the stop found the foot of Lynskey who pushed the ball into the net.

Canisius, who started the day in a tie for first place, found their offensive aggression in the second half. The Griffs pushed their first goal in just 31 seconds into the stanza. The Griffs registered five shots in the second half after tallying just one in the first.

Canisius almost found a dramatic equalizer with Mia Iacona putting s shot towards net with six seconds remaining, but Wright was able to make the save and Meghan Carragher cleared away any danger.

Wright made two saves in her historic win as she tied the program's all-time wins record with Anne Lyons, who also registered 49 victories 25 years ago.

Fairfield has now earned 14 points in the MAAC standings, one point shy of Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart for the league lead.

The Stags will return to home and welcome Mount St. Mary's to Lessing Field on Wednesday at 4pm.
