NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Ashley McMahon scored two goals and
Sam Kersey added a first half tally in leading the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team to a 3-0 victory over the Iona Gaels in their MAAC opener. With the victory, the Stags win their fifth-straight match and improve their overall record to 6-1. Fairfield has also now tallied a 27-4-2 mark against the conference over the last four seasons.
Ashlyn Walsh recorded two assists while Kersey also tallied a helper.
"It was a tough road game in the MAAC," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "We didn't have our best game today but we did enough to get three points."
McMahon got the scoring going just 11 minutes into the game when she took a pass from Kersey and after taking a dribble, finished in the top left corner of the goal past the keeper.
Kersey rocketed her own goal seven minute later as she collected a pass from Walsh and looped the ball over the keeper to put the Stags up 2-0 in the first half.
McMahon completed the team's scoring in the 79th minute as she found the rebound off Walsh's shot and trickled her shot into the goal to complete the 3-0 victory. With her two assists, Walsh now ties for the team lead with four.
In the match, the Stags out-shot the Gaels 18-4 including a 10-1 advantage with shots on target.
Katie Wright needed just one save in collecting her 46th career win and 20th clean sheet.
Fairfield will return home when they welcome their crosstown rivals Sacred Heart to Lessing Field on Saturday at 1pm.
