FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Four different scorers led the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team to a 4-1 victory over crosstown rivals Sacred Heart on Saturday.
Ashley McMahon,
Brooke Walonis,
Alex Darcy, and
Meghan Carragher all touched net for the Stags with
Ashlyn Walsh leading the playmaking efforts with three assists. The victory brings Fairfield's overall record to 7-1 including a perfect 2-0 in conference play. Fairfield also extends their nation-leading home winning streak to 20-straight and improves their MAAC record to 28-4-2 over the last four seasons.
"I thought it was a good performance for us," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "They're a difficult team to play against stylistically. We had to be disciplined in our possession and make sure we were clean. We got four good goals from four different people by doing different things. We're going to expect a lot of games like this over the next 10 so it was good to keep our foot on the pedal and move forward."
McMahon got the scoring started with a long-range rocket goal from well outside the box finishing in the top corner for her third goal over the last two matches. Darcy and Walsh both set up the goal in the 22nd minute and the Stags brought a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Walonis doubled the Fairfield advantage as she collected a Walsh rebounded shot and scooted the ball past the keeper for her first Fairfield goal.
Darcy added her third goal of the season by collecting a cross from
Kelly O'Connor and Walsh by depositing the ball to the lower right corner. The score came 17 seconds after Sacred Heart notched their lone goal on a penalty kick.
Fairfield earned their own penalty kick in the 71st minute and Carragher was able to beat the keeper for her first score of the year.
Walsh led the Stags with three assists, bringing her season total to seven which would overtake the MAAC lead. Darcy also tallied three points on a goal and an assist.
Fairfield is back in action on the Lessing Field pitch next Saturday when they host Siena at 1pm.
