FAIRFIELD, Conn. — On the night that Fairfield University Volleyball unveiled its 2024 MAAC Championship banner at Leo D. Mahoney Arena, the Stags powered past visiting Northeastern by a score of 3-1.
Katelyn Cook hammered a match-leading 19 kills for Fairfield, while the duo of
Allie Elliott and
Mamie Krubally put down 13 apiece.
The Stags took the match by set scores of 25-20, 25-20, 26-28 and 25-22 to improve to 5-2 on the season. Northeastern slipped to 4-3 in defeat. Fairfield is 2-0 against the Coastal Athletic Association this fall, adding tonight's win over the Huskies to a 3-2 win over Towson on opening weekend.
"I thought we took our foot off the gas pedal a little bit in the third set against a good team, and that shift in momentum carried over into the fourth. But it was good for us to be in that situation and figure out how to battle and work through the adversity," said Head Coach
Nancy Somera. "Kudos to Northeastern, they stepped up their defense and made us adjust and made us take extra swings. But I'm proud of the way we fought through that, and we got some spark plays and made smart decisions down the stretch to close it out."
Cook swung at a .351 clip on her way to 19 kills. The sophomore added 13 digs to record a double-double. Elliott also had a double-double from the pins with 13 kills and a team-leading 15 digs.
Krubally's 13 kills came on .385 and her foil on the right side,
Emma Bortolotti, tattooed 11 kills on .450 hitting. Middles
Maya Walker and
Harlan Wyche had eight and four kills, respectively.
The attack was managed by the duo of
Abby Jandro and
Zofia Sykut to a .283 hitting percentage. Jandro doled out 30 assists and Sykut had 20 helpers while contributing 11 digs.
Delaney Moon passed out a career-best nine assists from the libero spot and picked up 14 digs.
At the net, Walker had a hand in four of Fairfield's six blocks, including a solo stuff. Cook played a part in three blocks and Bortolotti had a pair as the Stags limited Northeastern to a .196 hitting percentage.
Northeastern was led by 12 kills on .579 hitting by Beatrice Gennari and 11 kills for Valentina Meirelles.
Prior to the match, Fairfield Volleyball unveiled the banner that will hang in the rafters in honor of the Stags' 2024 MAAC Championship. In addition to the current team, the Stags were joined by alumnae
Kyla Berg,
Noelle Carey,
Mikayla Haut and
Blakely Montgomery. Svenja Rodenbusch, who is playing her graduate season at Northeastern, also made the brief trip across the net to celebrate the 2024 squad.
Fairfield wraps up the three-match homestand tomorrow – Saturday, Sept. 13 – with a 4 p.m. visit from UConn. The Huskies will make their first-ever trip to Mahoney Arena at 6-1 following a five-set loss this evening at Yale.
