Stags Drop Finale Against Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team dropped the series finale as the Sacred Heart Pioneers were able to avoid the sweep with a 10-run ninth inning leading to a 20-2 decision. The loss snaps Fairfield's 10-game winning streak, which had ranked in the top-five in the country. Dean Ferrara led the offense with three hits while driving in both runs.

Ferrara cut into a 4-0 deficit with a solo shot in the third to keep the Stags close. Sacred Heart would get that run back but Ferrara once again cut into the deficit with a RBI single up the middle in the fifth to put the score at 5-2.

The Pioneers scored 15 runs over the final three frames, highlighted by a 10-run ninth inning.

Jimmy Mulvaney and Ricky Erbeck were the two Stag relievers to record scoreless outings. Mulvaney kept the Stags in the game with two shutout frames in the middle innings while Erbeck tallied the final two outs of the game.

Ferrara led the Stags with three hits to bring his conference-leading total to 56 on the season. The Stags still win the series against Sacred Heart, their 23rd-straight conference series win.

Fairfield will next host Central Connecticut State on Tuesday at 3pm at Don and Chris Cook Field.
