Stags Come Back From Seven-Run Deficit to Overtake UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – The Fairfield University Baseball team rallied from an 8-1 deficit in the final three innings to take a 10-8 midweek decision over UMass. Fairfield scored four runs in the seventh, two in the eighth, and three in the ninth to complete the comeback. JP Kuczik and Tyler Kipp each provided run-scoring singles late while Nick Sturino opened the Fairfield scoring with a solo shot in the fourth.

"After falling behind by a sizable amount for the first half of the game, we found a way to claw back," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "We had some better pitching of strikes and a few clutch hits late".

The Stags (23-8) trailed 6-0 after just three innings but Sturino would put Fairfield on the board with his second homer of the spring.

Fairfield started their comeback in the seventh after Kuczik's sacrifice fly put the score at 8-2, but also put two outs in the inning. The Stags would draw three-straight walk with a free pass to Matthew Bucciero forcing in a run and cut the deficit to 8-3. Kipp cut into that deficit even more with a two-run single down the left field line and put the Stags back in the game at 8-5.

The Stags would plate two runs in the eighth on a Kuczik single and a Dean Ferrara sacrifice fly to put the game at 8-7.

Jack Sheldon would pitch a scoreless eighth to give the Stags a chance to find more dramatics in the top of the ninth.

After Kipp and Sean Meth led off the ninth with back-to-back walks, Sturino loaded the bases with a bunt single. Jack Byrne would score the tying run on a wild pitch and TJ Schmalzle would give the squad the lead with a sac fly. Nolan Colby added an insurance run with a RBI ground out.

Will Fox would enter and record his first career save, allowing just one hit in a scoreless ninth.

The final five Fairfield pitchers: Jake Memoli, Jimmy Mulvaney, Kevin Kell, Sheldon, and Fox all combined to not allow a run in five innings. Sheldon picked up his first collegiate win by leading the group getting four outs.

The Stags will continue their five-game road trip with a visit to Iona for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Friday at 11am.
