FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Matthew Bucciero hit two home runs and drove in seven leading the Fairfield University Baseball team to a 10-3 win over FDU, their fifth-straight on the home stand. Bucciero led the team with four hits while
Luke Nomura and
Dean Ferrara would each have two base knocks and drive in a run late.
Six of Fairfield's (31-9) runs were scored in the first three innings with Bucciero accounting for five RBI. The junior led off his afternoon with an opposite field two-run homer just inside the right field foul pole.
He would add three more with a towering shot over the right center field fence for his eighth homer of the season. Ferrara reached base on an error and Nomura followed with a double to set up Bucciero's three-run shot in the third.
The only run scored in the first three innings by the Stags not off the bat of Bucciero came from the speed of
TJ Schmalzle who walked with two outs and then would steal second and third while forcing an errant throw to score.
Fairfield added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth with a Ferrara RBI single and a Nomura run-scoring double. Bucciero would cap his seven RBI day by driving in both of them with a single.
On the mound, six Fairfield pitchers combined for the victory with
Will Youngman credited with the midweek victory. The Stag pitchers bent but did not break after walking 13 batters but managed to strand 14 FDU runners.
Youngman and
Matt Kalfas each threw two hitless frames combining for five strikeouts and keep the 6-0 lead into the fourth.
Ricky Erbeck led the group with four strikeouts.
Fairfield will close out their eight-game home stand and welcome in-state rivals Quinnipiac to Don and Chris Cook Field for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday at 3pm.
