FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team hit three three-run homers off the bats of
Nolan Colby,
Nick Sturino, and
Dean Ferrara in taking a crucial series opening win over in-state rivals Quinnipiac with a 15-5 final score. With the win, the Stags claim their sixth-straight victory and improve their league-best mark with a 17-2 conference record.
"We didn't get a lot of hits but we hit with men on base," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "We hit three three-run homers which was the difference in the game."
The Stags (32-9; 17-2) were locked in a scoreless game over the first three innings and were held without a hit during that span. Fairfield's first hit came in dramatic fashion as Colby crushed a two-out, two-strike pitch over the right center field wall for a three-run homer and break the scoreless tie at 3-0.
Fairfield would double that score in the very next inning as
Nick Sturino smashed another three-run homer on to the parking lot over the right center field fence. The long ball was Sturino's fifth of the season.
After giving up three runs in the top of the sixth, the Stags added one in the bottom half before exploding for eight in the bottom of the seventh.
Luke Nomura provided the run in the sixth with a single up the middle.
Ferrara highlighted the eight-run seventh inning with another three-run homer, the third for the Stags in the evening. It was Ferrara's seventh homer of the season and his fifth in the last five games.
Sean Meth added a two-run single and Sturino provided a two-run double over the center fielder's glove.
Alekson registered his seventh win of the season with six innings pitched allowing the three runs in the sixth.
Matthew Grabmann tallied a scoreless frame in the seventh.
Six different Stags picked up hits with Nomura, Sturino, and
Tyler Kipp all picking up a pair. Sturino was the stand out offensively reaching base all five times with two hits and three walks. He has now drawn 42 walks this year which is the fourth-most in a single season in program history. He also made back-to-back spectacular catches in left including a full-stretched diving grab.
The Stags will now have two chances to take their 26th-straight conference series win when they take on the Bobcats in the middle game scheduled for Saturday at 3pm.
