FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team crushed three home runs including a grand slam off the bat of
Sean Meth and recorded their 30th win of the season with an 11-7 victory over Fordham on Tuesday. The reigning MAAC Player of the Week
Luke Nomura led the team with four hits including his team-leading 12th of the year. It is the sixth-straight full season the Stags have reached 30 victories and the tenth time under Head Coach
Bill Currier.
Fairfield scored the first 11 runs of the game all in the first three innings, with six extra base hits and three home runs.
Before the power display, the Stags manufactured a few runs. The Stags, who entered the game fourth in the nation in sacrifice flies, added a pair of sac flies in the fourth from
JP Kuczik and
Tyler Kipp.
TJ Schmalzle would then hit his fly ball over the wall for a two-run shot and capping a five-run first frame.
Fairfield added six more in the third with four coming off the bat of Meth as he crushed a grand slam for his fourth homer of the spring.
Nomura would add two more by smashing a two-run home over the scoreboard in left field to put the score at 11-0.
Fordham would add a few runs with three-straight doubles in the fourth and back-to-back homers in the sixth to cut into the lead at 11-5.
Blake Helmstetter tallied his first win of the campaign by tossing the shutout scoreless innings allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Nomura, who was just named the MAAC Player of the Week hours before the game, added a game-high four hits including his team-leading 12th homer.
Dean Ferrara followed with a three-hit game and extended his conference lead with his 73rd of the year.
Fairfield has now hit 14 long balls over their last four games to reach 45 for the season.
The Stags picked up their 30th win of the year for the sixth-straight full season and the tenth time in the 14 years under Coach Currier.
Fairfield will look for win number 31 when they continue their eight-game homestand with a visit from FDU on Wednesday at 3:30pm
