Stags Complete Sweep of Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Luke Nomura and Nick Sturino both hit home runs and Bowen Baker added six strong innings in his return to the mound as the Fairfield University Baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the Iona Gaels with a 6-1 victory on Sunday. With the win, the Stags improve their conference-best record to 13-2 and also pick up their 26th win overall.

"Bo Baker returned to the rotation and pitched efficiently while keeping the batters from getting clutch hits," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "I'm proud of our defense playing solid under tough weather conditions all weekend."

The Stags (26-8; 13-2 MAAC) plated the first five runs of the games starting with a four-spot in the third. Nomura started the scoring with a two-run homer down the left field line, which would be followed by RBI singles from Tyler Kipp and JP Kuczik.

Sturino would add another insurance run by driving a 3-2 pitch over the right center field wall for his second long ball of the series. Overall, it was Sturino's third homer of the season and also improved his team-best on-base percentage to .465.

After leaving his last start with an injury, Baker was very impressive over his six frames allowing just five hits and striking out two in his scoreless outing. He would tally his fifth win of the year to improve his record to 5-0.

Jimmy Mulvaney would get the final four outs of the contest while striking out a pair, the second time in the series Mulvaney has closed out the game.

Kipp and Nolan Colby led the team with two hits with Colby picking up two doubles. Matthew Bucciero reached base three times with a double and two walks.

Fairfield will complete their five-game road trip with a midweek visit to Columbia on Tuesday at 3:30pm before hosting Merrimack for a three-game set starting on Thursday.
