#16/17 Stags Shutdown Delaware Late to Claim 13-10 CAA Win in Newark

Will Consoli racks up seven points, Hirsch makes 16 saves in the key league victory

NEWARK, Del. – After an even 7-7 first half in Saturday's CAA game at Delaware, #16/17 Fairfield University Men's Lacrosse doubled-up the host Blue Hens after the intermission to claim a 13-10 victory. Will Consoli had a career-best seven points in the win, and Owen Hirsch made a career-high 16 saves.

With the win, Fairfield improves to 11-1 on the season and 4-1 in the CAA. The Stags are one victory shy of the program record of 12 wins set in 2012 and matched in 2014.

Delaware slips to 6-5 on the year with a 2-3 league mark.

Consoli's seven points consisted of four goals and three assists. Luke Okupski added a hat trick for the Stags and Keegan Lynch had a four-point afternoon with two goals and two assists.

Hirsch made 10 of his 16 saves in the second half, including two stops on the doorstep in the final stages of the fourth quarter. The senior goalkeeper also picked up two ground balls.

The 7-7 deadlock in the first half was marked by runs, starting with three straight goals for the Stags to open the game. Consoli, Okupski and Jason LaMay Jr. did the honors as Fairfield built a fast 3-0 lead.

Delaware responded with three in a row, including two in a span of nine seconds in the last final of the quarter, ending the frame tied at 3-3. The Hens tacked on the first goal of the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead before Lynch ended the Fairfield drought and knotted the game at 4-4. After two more Delaware markers, the Stags put together their second three-goal spurt of the day. Okupski started the run with a man-up tally, followed by LaMay and Lynch each getting their second of the afternoon to put the Stags back on top, 7-6.

Fairfield was poised to take its one-goal advantage into the locker room, but Blue Hens' standout Brendan Powers scored with just eight seconds left in the half to tie the game at 7-7.

That lead was the last of the day, as the Stags scored the first two goals of the third quarter – courtesy of Consoli and Jake Gilbert. Fairfield nearly held Delaware off the board in the stanza, but Powers again struck with eight seconds remaining to push the margin to 9-8 in favor of the Stags entering the fourth quarter.

Consoli again broke the ice in the final frame. After Powers answered for the hosts, Okupski and Consoli went back-to-back to run the Fairfield lead to its largest of the second half at 12-9.

Delaware kept the pressure on with a John McCurry goal with 3:57 to go, but Dylan Smith won the ensuing faceoff and the Stags burned more than a minute off the game clock before the Hens regained possession. A transition opportunity was squashed by a Hirsch save, allowing the Stags to let more time tick down. Delaware's next shot did not come until just 1:02 remained. That Powers' effort was corralled by Hirsch for his 16th stop of the day, and Gilbert dunked in an insurance tally with nine seconds left to ice the 13-10 victory.

In addition to Hirsch's 16 saves, the Fairfield defense was led by two caused turnovers and three ground balls apiece from starting close defensemen Nate Livingston and Julian Radossich. Long pole Austin McClintic and SSDM Andrew Kasten also had three groundballs apiece.

Fairfield was clipped, 15-12, on the restart with Smith leading the effort at 9-for-17 with five ground balls.

Powers had a five-point day for the hosts with three goals and two assists. Kevin Ellington made 12 saves in the Delaware cage.

Fairfield is back on the road next Saturday, April 19 for a showdown at reigning CAA Champion Towson. The Tigers top the league standings again this spring at 5-0 as a part of a 7-5 overall mark after a 25-3 home win this afternoon against Hampton.
