NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team clinched a series win, their 24
th-straight in the MAAC, with a 7-3 victory over Iona on Saturday. The Stags recorded five RBI extra base hits in the middle innings as
Dean Ferrara, TJ Schmlazle,
JP Kuczik,
Nick Sturino, and
Nolan Colby all picked up clutch hits. On the mound,
Kyle Lesler picked up the win with five solid innings with
Jake Memoli adding three strong frames.
"Our hitters did damage in the middle innings with multiple extra base hits and all three of our pitchers limiting the big inning to keep us in the lead," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "The hitters stayed patient for the tights pitches and barreled them into the gaps."
The Stags (29-4; 12-2 MAAC) started off with five-straight hits to start the fourth with
Tyler Kipp starting the rally with a leadoff triple. Fairfield would then have back-to-back RBI doubles with Sturino and Kuczik tallying the extra base hits. Schmalzle would cap the frame and plate two with a shot down the line.
Colby added another insurance run with a two-run triple with Ferrara following with a RBI double and putting the score at 7-1.
Lesler would register the first five innings on the mound for the Stags allowing just an unearned run. He also tallied nine ground ball outs and struck out a batter.
Jake Memoli came in for the bulk of the relief role with three strong innings allowing two runs and striking out three.
Jimmy Mulvaney would close the game with a scoreless ninth.
Eight different Stags starters picked up a hit with Ferrara, Kuczik, and Schmalzle all leading the team with a pair. Ferrara registered his 60th hit of the season which leads the MAAC and ranks top-10 nationally.
The Stags improved their MAAC-leading record to 12-2 and also clinched their 24th-straight conference series win.
Fairfield will try for the sweep of the Gaels tomorrow at noon.
