NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. – In a contest with close matches all across the courts in New Windsor, Fairfield University Men's Tennis ultimately earned the edge over host Marist for a 4-3 win on Friday afternoon. The Stags improved to 3-2 in the MAAC with the win.
After Marist claimed the doubles point, the Stags needed four wins in singles play to garner the team victory. First,
Kostas Kollias finished off his match at #3 and
Alex Aguiar earned a straight-set win at #6.
Luca Benaibbouche then earned a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win at #4 to record the third Fairfield singles point. The clincher came at #2 singles, where
Calum Jessett bounced back from an early deficit to lock up a 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 win and ice the 4-3 team triumph.
"I'm unbelievably proud of this team," said Head Coach
Jeff Bricker. "We have been battling a ton of injuries, and to fight back and get the win today was huge. Calum was fantastic at #2 to rally back from a set down."
The Stags are back in action on Sunday to celebrate Senior Day at the Walsh Athletic Center Outdoor Courts before a noon meeting with Mount St. Mary's.
