FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse was on the short side of an 18-10 final on Wednesday, falling to Army West Point on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Ten different Stags contributed to the Fairfield scoring, and
Keira Furey made 11 saves protecting the cage.
With the loss, the Stags slip to 2-5 on the season. Army, which is unranked but receiving votes in this week's national polls, improved to 4-1.
Grace Slater, who entered the day as the MAAC's leading scorer and two-time reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, had another standout day with a goal and four assists. She ran her league-leading totals to 20 goals and 31 total points.
Amanda Kozak added a hat trick for the Stags, who also got single tallies from
Brooke Marotti,
Kit Zanelli,
Haley Burns,
Kelly Haggerty,
Kyleigh Tufano and
Katie Bergen.
Tessa Caputo dished out a pair of assists working behind the cage, while Marotti, Zanelli and
Katelyn Greeley each had one helper.
In the midfield, the Stags gained an 18-12 advantage on the restart.
Brynn Donnelly came down with a game-best nine draw controls, with Zanelli adding five and
Eva Petrone nabbing one.
Macey Daly paced the defense with two ground balls and a caused turnover.
Furey's 11 saves marked a career best for the rookie goalkeeper.
Army was led by its dynamic offensive duo of Allison Reilly (3g, 6a) and Brigid Duffy (7g, 1a). Lily Valentini pitched in a hat trick to the Black Knights' scoring efforts. Lindsey Serafine protected the cage for the first three quarters, making three saves with six goals allowed.
Up next, the Stags head west to close out the non-conference slate with a Sunday, March 9 clash with Denver. The Pioneers improved to 4-3 on the season with a 13-11 win over #5 Michigan this afternoon in the Mile High City.
Fairfield will open the MAAC schedule on Saturday, March 22 at Siena before returning to Rafferty Stadium to host Rider on the following Saturday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
