FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team scored four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth and then cruised to a 9-3 victory over NJIT to close out their five-game homestand. Fairfield tallied 24 base runners in the contest with 11 hits, eight walks, and four hit batters.
Dean Ferrara led the offense with three hits while
Matthew Grabmann picked up his team-leading fourth win.
The Stags got rid of an early 2-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the first with
Luke Nomura crushing a double to left and Ferrara scoring after an error by the outfielder. Nomura would later score on a double steal attempt.
Nolan Colby gave the team the lead with a RBI groundout in the second and
Nick Sturino broke another tied score with a bases loaded walk in the fifth. Sturino reached base four times with three walks and a hit by pitch.
Matt Lussier would add another run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. Fairfield's biggest offensive inning came in their last at-bats as they plated four runs on four hits. The first four batters reached base with Nomura singling in a run and
Sean Meth following with his own RBI single.
Matthew Bucciero brought home a run with a sacrifice fly and
TJ Schmalzle capped the scoring with a bases loaded walk.
On the mound, three Stags tallied scoreless outings, led by
Will Fox's two innings of shutout relief.
Blake Helmstetter and
Kevin Kell both recorded perfect innings to end the game.
Ferrara, who entered as the MAAC hits leader, tallied three more base knocks to lead the squad. Every Stags' starter notched at least one hit with Nomura also recording a multiple-hit game.
The Stags are back in action tomorrow at Army West Point with first pitch at 3:30pm.
