WEST POINT, N.Y. – Dean Ferrara collected three more hits while
Matthew Bucciero and
TJ Schmalzle picked up a pair as the Fairfield University Baseball team recorded an 8-3 victory at Army West Point on Wednesday.
Will Youngman picked up the win as five different Fairfield pitchers combined for the victory.
"It was excited to see
Will Youngman get his first college win as a Stag," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "Dean hit three rocket hits along while Bucciero barrelled two extra base hits with runners in scoring position."
Grant Smeltzer started the game and gave the Stags (16-7) the momentum with three strong innings allowing just a solo homer as the only hit he surrendered while striking out three. Fairfield would get that run and more back in third by plating four runs.
Nolan Colby had the first run-scoring hit of the frame with a single to right to plate
JP Kuczik for the Stags' first run.
Luke Nomura would then drive in a pair with a double and Bucciero hit into a productive double play to put the score at 4-1.
Bucciero would plate another run in the seventh with a single to right center which brought home Ferrara.
The Black Knights would inch closer with two runs in the bottom half of the frame, but the Stags would add a pair of insurance runs to close out the game. Ferrara's third hit of the afternoon scored two with a double in the eighth and
Tyler Kipp drove a ball to right center to plate Bucciero in the ninth.
After Smeltzer's three innings, Youngman led the pen with a pair of scoreless frames while
Ricky Erbeck recorded a scoreless fifth.
Jimmy Mulvaney finished the game by retiring the side in order on nine pitches.
Ferrara led the team with three hits for the second-straight game and the sixth time this season. He also reached base four times and scored twice.
As a team, the Stags drew seven walks for the second-straight game while totaling 18 base runners.
The Stags will stay on the road for their five-game road trip with a three-game set at Canisius this weekend.
