Stags Take Series with Shutout of Siena

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team won their 21st-straight conference series as they shutout the Siena Saints with a 10-0 final on Sunday. Kyle Lesler tossed the first six innings allowing just one hit while striking out six. At the plate, three Stags tallied multiple hits led by three from Nick Sturino. Matthew Bucciero led the squad with three runs scored including crushing his third homer of the spring.

Lesler was in complete control in his six innings on the mound allowing only a single in the fifth inning with two walks and two hit batters. He struck out six including the final batters in the first, second, and sixth innings. He lowered his season ERA to 2.70 while picking up his second win of the campaign.

Offensively, the Stags scored a run in the second, third, and fourth innings before opening up the game with a five-spot in the fifth.

TJ Schmalzle opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly for his fifth RBI of the series. Sturino would double down the right field line to score Bucciero in the third to double the lead while Luke Nomura brought home a run with a single in the fourth.

Bucciero started the fifth with a solo shot off the scoreboard in left to out the game at 4-0. Dean Ferrara came up with the bases loaded and two outs and lifted a fly ball that dropped between the right and centerfielders for a three-run double. Ferrara would later score on a wild pitch to complete the five-run frame.

Sturino would force the early win with a RBI single to right to increase the lead to 10 and end the contest.

The Fairfield relievers of Grant Smeltzer and Peter Phillips kept the momentum started by Lesler to hurl scoreless frames.

The Stags improve their overall record to 14-7 and their conference mark to 5-1, the top in the conference.

Fairfield will host NJIT on Tuesday at 3pm to complete their five-game homestand before heading to the road for five-straight contests.
