HARRISONBURG, Va. – Bowen Baker tossed six scoreless innings scattering just three hits and set the tone as the Fairfield University Baseball team shutout the host James Madison 7-0 to take the weekend series.
Dean Ferrara,
Luke Nomura, and
Billy Sullivan all picked up three hit days while
Jack Sheldon and
Kevin Kell completed the shutout in relief.
"Bo settled in by the second inning by mixing speeds well and limiting hits," Head Coach
Bill Currier said.
"Our hitters did a good job getting some timely hits with runners on base, especially in the fifth to finally get us ahead after both pitchers limited baserunners."
Baker retired the last 13 batters he faced while allowing just three baserunners on a double and two singles. He would strikeout four while needing 84 pitches in his six innings of work.
It took the Stags until the fifth inning to break up the scoreless game as they plated three runs in the frame. RBI doubles from
Matthew Bucciero and Sturino put the Stags on the board while a single by Sullivan brought Sturino home on an errant throw.
Fairfield added four more insurance runs in the eighth starting with a
Nolan Colby RBI single and
Dean Ferrara following with a run-scoring double. For the second-straight game the Stags worked out back-to-back bases loaded walks with
Sean Meth and Bucciero each bringing home a pair.
The RBI marked the fifth-straight game that Meth has brought in a run after plating five in yesterday's win. Ferrara led the Stags with three hits while increasing his season average to .553. Through eight games, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, leads the team in: average, hits (21), slugging percentage (.711), and on-base percentage (.590).
Sheldon and Kell would combine for the final three innings of relief with Sheldon going two hitless innings.
The win clinches the second series victory for the Stags in the early season. Fairfield will open up another three-game set at George Washington starting on Friday at 3pm.
