Stags Slug Past George Washington in Series Opener

WASHINGTON, DC. – The Fairfield University Baseball team collected 12 runs on 18 hits and Ben Alekson shutdown George Washington for a 12-1 victory to open up the three-game series. Nick Sturino led the Stags with four hits while Dean Ferrara and Tyler Kipp each picked up three.
 
The Stags (6-4) started their offensive onslaught early in the game, picking up two runs in the second and six in the third. Sturino and TJ Schmalzle started the scoring with run scoring hits as the duo would combine for five RBI in the contest.
 
The biggest inning for the Stags came in the third as the squad picked up six runs on six hits. Kipp started the frame with a two-RBI single and was followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of Sturino to put the Stags ahead 5-0.
 
Sturino would finish with a pair of doubles after entered the game leading the MAAC with 0.78 doubles per game, ranking second in the nation.
 
Billy Sullivan followed with his own RBI double and the inning would be capped with a RBI single by Ferrara.
 
Fairfield would run their advantage to double-digits with RBI singles by Schmalzle and Ferrara in the sixth. The Stags would finally close out their scoring with a RBI single from Schmalzle, his third RBI of the day.
 
That scoring was more than enough for the pitching trio of Alekson, Jack Sheldon, and Will Fox. Alekson highlighted the group with six solid innings allowing just one run on one hit while striking out six.
 
Sturino led the Stags with four hits with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI. Kipp collected three hits while scoring three times and driving in three. Ferrara, who entered the game second in the nation in average, raised that number with a 3-for-5 showing while also driving in three.
 
In total the Stags had 28 base runners with 18 hits and 10 walks, led by three from Sean Meth.
 
The two teams will play the middle game of the series tomorrow at 1pm.
