ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team had their best shooting performance under the season's brightest lights as they drained 15 3-pointers at a season-best .517 clip to claim the 2024-25 MAAC Championship Title with a 76-53 victory over second-seeded Quinnipiac.
Meghan Andersen led the game with 27-points on six made 3-pointers to claim the tournament's Most Outstanding Player honor.
Sydni Scott had her best game as a Stag going 6-for-6 from 3-point range to account for her 18 points.
The win marked Fairfield's second-straight conference title, their third in the last four years, and their sixth in program history.
"I'm so proud of this group and the way they stuck together," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "It would have been really easy when we hadn't played our best basketball in the last couple of games to get frustrated or timid, but I knew without a shadow of a doubt that this group was going to be ready to go. We're here, we're so excited to keep going and we know we're not done yet."
After a deadlocked first quarter with both teams netting 15 points, the Stags (28-4) found their offensive swagger in the second quarter, outscoring the Bobcats at a 26-11 margin.
Fairfield shot 5-for-8 from long-range with Andersen connecting on three of her four attempts. The Stags opened the period on a 10-0 run with an Andersen 3-pointer forcing a Quinnipiac timeout. After the timeout, Andersen made another big play with a traditional 3-point play to balloon the lead to double-digits.
The Stags' defense held Quinnipiac's star and MAAC Player of the Year Gal Raviv in check most of the game, but the freshman drained back-to-back 3-pointers to make the lead single-digits. The Stags would qualm any notion of a Quinnipiac comeback during that stretch with Scott matching Raviv with back-to-back 3-pointers of her own.
Andersen followed with two-straight 3-pointers to increase the lead to 16 and
Cyanne Coe put in a lay-up to put the Stags up 18 in the final minute of the half.
Fairfield would lead by at least nine throughout the entire second half and kept their foot on the pedal with a 6-for-9 showing from deep in the fourth quarter.
Kaety L'Amoreaux had one of the biggest shots with a fadeaway, shot-clock beating 3-pointer.
Andersen led the way with 27-points while tying Scott with six made 3-pointers, one shy of tying the tournament's single game record.
"My teammates and coaching staff were very confident in me and without them I wouldn't have made the six 3s," Scott said. "Without them driving to the basket and finding the open perso, I wouldn't have made those 3s."
Andersen was named the MAAC Championship MVP after her 27-point Championship performance.
Raiana Brown and L'Amoreaux were also named to the All-Tournament team.
The Stags have now clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh-time in school history and will await their First Round opponent on Selection Sunday on Sunday night at 8pm on ESPN. All fans are invited to join the Stags at a watch party in Leo D. Mahoney Arena om Sunday March 16th. Doors open at 7 p.m. This event is free for all Stags fans and includes food and drinks.
