NEWPORT, R.I.-The Fairfield University Women's Tennis team opened a New England road trip on Saturday evening with a 6-1 loss against the University of Rhode Island in a match that was played at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode island. The Stags are now 0-4 on the young Spring season; while URI remains unbeaten at 3-0.
Sophomore Anna Neyestani earned Fairfield's lone singles' victory at the number two flight, coming back to post a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10) win a in a superbreaker.
Sophomore Nicolette Loeffler and freshman Maria Gell each fell in straight sets at number four and five singles respectively, but they saw their second sets go to a tiebreaker, as Loeffler was defeated, 5-7, 6-7 (7) and Gell was downed 3-6, 6-7 (9).
The Rams won Saturday's doubles' point with wins at number one and number three, but the Stags' duo of Sarah Liu and Victoria Mandma picked up 7-5 victory at number two.
Tomorrow, the Fairfield women's team continues its weekend trek through Connecticut's neighboring New England states with a Sunday morning match at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
