EDISON, N.J. – Braden Sparks and
Declan Wucherpfennig have earned weekly honors from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. Sparks and Wucherpfennig led Fairfield University Men's Basketball in last Monday's victory over CCNY.
Sparks set a new career high with 26 points on 9-for-17 shooting against the Beavers en route to MAAC Player of the Week laurels. His output was fueled by another career best of six made three-pointers. The MAAC's leading scorer also hauled in four rebounds with two steals in just 20 minutes of action.
In addition to conference-best 18.2 points per game, Sparks ranks third in the MAAC this season in both three-pointers per game (3.23) and three-point percentage (.447). He has netted 20-plus points in seven of 13 games this year, including five of his last six outings.
Wucherpfennig earns his first MAAC Rookie of the Week nod following a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds against the Beavers. He racked up his career-best 20 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field. Wucherpfennig's 13 boards including six from the offensive glass, and the freshman forward also registered three assists and two steals.
On the season, Wucherpfennig is averaging 11.8 points per game on .500 shooting from the floor. He ranks second in the MAAC in rebounding behind only his teammate and classmate
Brandon Benjamin, pulling in 8.7 caroms per game.
Last Monday's win was the eighth for Fairfield Men's Basketball to match the program's most regular season non-conference victories since 2012-13. The Stags are 8-5 on the year as they resume MAAC play tonight – Monday, Dec. 29 – at Mahoney Arena with a 7 p.m. visit from Saint Peter's.
