Stags Earn Senior Day Sweep over Canisius

Fairfield improves to 15-1 in the MAAC

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball celebrated Senior Day in style with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Canisius on Saturday at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The Stags used a balanced attack both offensively and defensively to take the MAAC by set scores of 25-11, 26-24, and 25-22.
 
With the win, Fairfield improves to 21-5 on the season and 15-1 in the MAAC. The Stags can claim at least a share on the MAAC Regular Season Championship with one win in their final two regular season matches next weekend at Manhattan and Iona. Fairfield would also clinch a share of the regular season crown with a Quinnipiac loss.
 
Fairfield also closed out the home portion of the MAAC regular season at 9-0. The Stags have been unbeaten at home during the conference schedule 21 times in the past 33 seasons, including 11 occasions in 19 campaigns under the 18-match MAAC schedule. Overall, Fairfield is 213-20 (.914) all-time in MAAC regular season home outings.
 
Canisius slid to an even 8-8 MAAC tally as part of a 10-16 overall mark.
 
"We weren't as crisp as yesterday, which can happen in the second match of a back-to-back. But we fought through it and did what we had to to come away with the sweep," said Head Coach Nancy Somera. "We hope to still have a lot of volleyball left to play together, but I'm happy that we were able to celebrate our seniors and have them all contribute to a big conference win."
 
The three seniors – Allie Elliott, Abby Jandro, and Maya Walker – earned their 65th MAAC win. The conference record for a four-year class is 67, established by Fairfield's seniors who competed from 206-09.
 
In today's match, Walker put down nine kills at a .444 clip and got a hand on six blocks. Elliott had seven kills on .333 hitting from the pins to go along with nine digs. And Jandro – one half of Fairfield's setting duo – doled out 10 assists and shared the team lead with 11 digs.
 
Also on the offensive end, Mamie Krubally chipped in six kills and Emma Bortolotti had five from the right side. Katelyn Cook, Harlan Wyche, and Lindsey Healey pitched in two finishers apiece.
 
To go along with Jandro's 10 assists, Zofia Sykut distributed 14 helpers.
 
The Stags also scored 10 points form behind the service line, fueled by a career-best five aces from Cook. Sykut landed a pair of aces, while Elliott, Natalie Carlin, and Nicole Macalintal had one apiece.
 
Fairfield's defense was fueled by 12 blocks. In addition to Walker's six, including two solo stuffs, Wyche had a hand in five rejections while Krubally and Bortolotti were part of four blocks apiece. Overall, the Stags limited Canisius to a .089 hitting percentage.
 
Julia Lenik led Canisius with nine kills, and Kalia Reisma added eight. Griffs' libero Brenda Reynaga led all players with 15 digs.
 
Fairfield Volleyball wraps up the regular season next weekend at Manhattan and Iona on Nov. 14-15.
