Stags Sprint Past Canisius in MAAC Semifinals

Fairfield racks up 17 blocks in the 3-0 win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball opened its postseason with a dominant 3-0 win over visiting Canisius in the semifinals of the 2025 MAAC Championship on Saturday afternoon at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The top-seeded Stags hit .338 and racked up 17 blocks en route to the victory by set scores of 25-14, 25-11, and 25-13.
 
With the win, Fairfield improves to 24-5 overall and advances to the MAAC Championship Match for the fifth consecutive season. The Stags will vie for their third consecutive MAAC Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mahoney Arena against either Quinnipiac and Rider, who are currently in action in the day's second semifinal.
 
"I thought we really executed our gameplan today, Our block came up huge, and that opened everything up," said Head Coach Nancy Somera.
 
All-MAAC First Team middle blocker Maya Walker headed the effort at the net with a hand in 10 of the 17 stuffs. Emma Bortolotti and Harlan Wyche each played a part in six, and Allie Elliott got a piece of five blocks. Elliott also led the back row defense with 10 digs. Delaney Moon added nine and Katelyn Cook picked up eight as the Stags limited Canisius to a -.058 hitting percentage.
 
On the offensive side, Cook led the balanced attack with 11 kills on .421 hitting from the pins. Mamie Krubally pitched in eight from the right side at a .429 clip, with Elliott and Bortolotti each contributing five kills. Harlan Wyche put down four kills and Walker had three to round out the offense.
 
The attack was guided by Zofia Sykut and Abby Jandro with 16 and 15 assists, respectively. Each setter also pitched in to the defensive effort with four digs.
 
To cap the Stags' scoring, Elliott served up two aces, with Sykut and Wyche each landing one.
 
Canisius wraps up its 2025 season at 12-18. The Griffs were led by eight kills and three blocks from Bella Mosquera.
 
First serve in the 2025 MAAC Championship Match is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. Fairfield fans are invited to a reception in The Diffley instead Mahoney Arena beginning at noon.
