POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Maya Walker became only the third player in Fairfield University Volleyball history to reach 400 career blocks to highlight a 3-1 victory for the Stags this afternoon at Marist. The Stags complete the season sweep of the Red Foxes by taking the road edition of the series by scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-15.
With their fourth straight win, Fairfield improved to 19-5 on the season and 13-1 in MAAC action. Marist fell to 8-18 on the year with a 6-8 conference record.
Walker had six blocks in the match to run her career total to 403. She sits third all-time behind Katie Mann's 408 rejections compiled from 2006-09 and the program-best 605 by Laura Gleason from 1992-95. The All-MAAC First Team middle ranks fourth in the MAAC this season with 1.08 blocks per set and is also the conference leader with a .419 hitting percentage.
Walker hit .429 in today's contest on her way to seven kills as one of five Stags between 12 and six finishers for the match.
Allie Elliott set that pace with 12 kills to go along with 12 digs.
Katelyn Cook chipped in 11 kills with 12 digs as both pin hitters posted a double-double for the second straight day.
On the right side,
Mamie Krubally had 11 kills and
Emma Bortolotti put down six.
The Fairfield attack hit .336 on the match, piloted by
Zofia Sykut and
Abby Jandro with 22 and 21 assists, respectively.
Defensively, Walker had a hand in six of Fairfield's 11 team blocks.
Harlan Wyche got a piece of five and Bortolotti contributed to four stuffs. The dozen digs apiece for Cook and Elliott led the Fairfield back row. Jandro added seven from the setter spot while
Natalie Carlin and
Nicole Macalintal each pitched in six digs.
Carlin, Jandro, and Macalintal rounded out the Fairfield scoring with two service aces apiece.
Marist was led by a match-best 13 kills from Eleana Koute. Sara Dasic neared a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs for the Red Foxes, who hit .191 for the match.
Fairfield Volleyball returns to Mahoney Arena for the final home weekend of the regular season. The Stags welcome Niagara on Nov. 7 and Canisius on Nov. 8 for the one and only meeting between Fairfield and the MAAC's Western New York contingent. Fairfield Volleyball will celebrate Senior Day prior to the Saturday, Nov. 8 clash with the Golden Griffs.
