Stags Head Across Town for Tuesday MAAC Matchup

Fairfield eyes a season sweep of Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball makes the short trip across town on Tuesday evening for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference clash with Sacred Heart. The Stags are eying a season sweep of the Pioneers.
 
Fairfield University Stags (16-5, 10-1 MAAC)
  • Fairfield split its most recent road weekend, falling 3-0 at Quinnipiac on Friday before rebounding with a 3-0 Saturday sweep at Merrimack.
  • With 10 MAAC wins, the Stags clinched their 30th consecutive season with a winning record in conference play.
  • Mamie Krubally paced the Fairfield attack with 11 kills in each end of the weekend series.
  • Katelyn Cook made her first career appearance at libero on Saturday at Merrimack, finishing with a match-high 15 digs.
  • On the season, the Stags lead the MAAC in hitting percentage (.269) and assists per set (12.41). They rank second in blocks per set (2.30) and kills per set (13.30).
 
Sacred Heart University Pioneers (8-15, 5-6 MAAC)
  • Sacred Heart also halved its MAAC road weekend, downing Merrimack while falling to Quinnipiac. The loss to the Bobcats ended the Pioneers' four-match winning streak.
  • SHU ranks ninth in the conference with a .155 hitting percentage, while opponents are hitting .225 against them.
  • Ryleigh Short paces the Pios' attack with 3.17 kills per set.
  • Miliani Villarreal is the MAAC's second-most prolific libero with 4.63 digs per set, good for 31st in the nation entering the week.
 
Last Meeting (Fairfield wins 3-1)
  • Fairfield hosted and defeated the Pioneers, 3-1, on Sept. 30 at Mahoney Arena.
  • The Stags racked up 16 blocks, including 10 in the third set alone. Harlan Wyche led the block party with a hand in nine rejections.
  • Offensively, Allie Elliott set the pace with 11 kills on .313 hitting.
  • The Pioneers were led by 14 kills and 14 digs from Ryleigh Short. Abbie Hagedorn also notched a double-double for Sacred Heart with 12 kills and 11 digs.
  • Fairfield leads the all-time series with Sacred Heart, 16-5. The Stags are riding a four-match winning streak in the series, including all three encounters since SHU joined the MAAC beginning last fall.
 
Around the MAAC
  • The Stags enter a three-match week atop the conference standings at 10-1.
  • Quinnipiac pulled within one match of Fairfield at 9-2 and owns the tiebreaker over the Stags in the event of a tie.
  • Niagara is also 9-2 on the year. The Purple Eagles hold a 3-1 win over Quinnipiac and hosts the Bobcats on Nov. 14. The lone meeting between the Stags and Niagara is set for Nov. 7 at Mahoney Arena.
