FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team continues its home stand this weekend, playing its final non-conference foe as well as an NEC opponent. The Stags host LIU on Friday, October 24 before welcoming UConn to campus on Sunday, October 26.
The Fairfield University field hockey team is hosting its annual Herd for the Cure game on Sunday, a Fairfield University athletics initiative to help raise funds and create awareness for breast cancer. This game will benefit The Gretta Ehret Dream Crazy Foundation.
The Stags are currently riding a nine-game winning streak into the weekend, tying the program's longest regular-season streak in school history. The 2019 team won its final nine regular-season matches before winning three more in postseason to extend it to 12. This year's streak includes seven victories against NEC opponents and two wins over non-conference foes.
Last weekend, Fairfield clinched a spot in the NEC championship tournament which runs from November 6-8 on Fairfield's home pitch. The Stags are one of two remaining unbeaten teams in the conference, joining St. Francis University at 7-0.
The team extended its winning streak with a 2-1 win over Mercyhurst University and a 7-1 decision over Rider last weekend. Forward
Alex Senior earned the NEC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals against Rider and setting up the game-winning goal in the Mercyhurst match.
Senior paces the Fairfield offense with 10 goals and two assists for 22 points, numbers which also place fourth in both categories among the NEC leaders.
Konni Hofmann and
Pilar Mengotti are not far behind Senior with 20 points each, both scoring eight goas and adding four assists to the team's offense.
Goalkeeper
Payton Rahn continues to put up impressive numbers after adding two more wins to her ledger. The fifth-year keeper owns a 1.38 goals against average with a .689 save percentage off 42 saves.
LIU looks to build on its 5-1 win over Merrimack during its last outing which gave the team a 2-4 record in NEC play. Lotte Haagmans paces the Sharks' offense with 15 goals and six assists for 36 points, scoring three goals in the team's win over Merrimack. GiGi Ranoldo and Tess Termars are next in line with 12 points each. Goalkeeper Emma Capparelli has collected 117 saves during her 14 appearances this season.
UConn comes off a 1-0 setback to eighth-ranked Duke University in its previous game, the seventh ranked opponent that the Huskies have played this year. The team brings a 7-7 overall record into Friday's match with Old Dominion, winning four of its last six matches.
Julia Bressler and Sol Simone have both reached double digit scoring totals with 12 and 10 respectively. Bressler owns a team-high six goals to account for her points while Simone adds two goals and a team-best six assists to the mix. Natalie Mckenna has 14 starts to her credit in the UConn goal, registering a 1.44 goals against average with a .764 save percentage which includes 68 saves.
The Stags will finish up the 2025 regular season at home when St. Francis University comes to the Fairfield campus on Friday, October 31.
