HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – For the sixth time this season, the Fairfield University field hockey team saw its offense gel for another five goal performance as the Stags scored at least one goal in all four quarters on their way to a 5-1 win over Hofstra University. The victory extended the team's winning streak to six matches and evened up its road record to 4-4 on the season.
Fairfield needed just seven minutes before it found its way to the scoreboard. The Stags took two shots in the opening minutes but it was
Camille Perlov's first shot on the afternoon that found its way past the goalkeeper. She accepted a pass from
Rylee LaLoup and sent her shot into the corner to push the team in front, 1-0.
The second quarter was even more impactful for the visitors as they worked their way to a pair of goals during the 15-minute span, giving the team a 3-0 lead by halftime. After taking seven shots in the opening period, the Stags were able to create five more opportunities with two finding the target.
The team's second goal of the day came just 100 seconds into the second quarter when
Pilar Mengotti completed a penalty corner set up by
Alice Pifferi and
Catalina Ness to double the Stags' advantage. Mengotti and Pifferi combined for the third goal when the latter's insertion pass off a penalty corner resulted in Mengotti's second goal of the game.
Fairfield improved its lead to 4-0 courtesy of
Konni Hofmann as the senior worked some magic midway through the third quarter, one of the team's 10 shot attempts during the 15-minute stretch. The offense forced goalkeeper Luci Hollister to make four stops as part of the barrage with only Hofmann's attempt getting past her.
Hofmann completed Fairfield's scoring in the fourth quarter when the Stags were awarded another penalty corner. This time, Pifferi sent the ball to Mengotti who worked a pass to Hofmann, giving the forward her chance to score her second goal of the match.
Hofstra avoided the shutout with a chance in the 56
th minute of play, taking advantage of a penalty corner. Teresa Karoff was the recipient of the set play, finishing the opportunity with her sixth goal of the campaign.
Fairfield goalkeeper
Payton Rahn made one save to earn the win, facing four shots during her 60 minutes of work. The Stags finished the match with 27 shots, efficiently placing 18 of those tries on target. Hollister and Tessa Lambright combined for 13 saves for Hofstra.
The Stags will complete their weekend road trip on Sunday when they travel north for an afternoon match with the University of Vermont. Game time is slated for 1 pm.
