NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team exploded for a 17-0 run while outscoring the Iona Gaels 1-5 in the third quarter, leading to a 72-50 win on the road to improve to 4-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Stags were led by three student-athletes in double figures with
Kaety L'Amoreaux (16),
Emina Selimovic (15), and
Sydni Scott (11) all reaching the feat.
"I think we shared the ball well," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "That was a concerted effort after halftime to not settle early in the shot clock. We like to score early in transition but I think we moved the ball better than we did in the first half and you saw that with wide open looks."
Fairfield's (10-3, 4-0 MAAC) 17-0 run turned a one-point lead into a comfortable 18-point advantage. L'Amoreax started the rally with back-to-back 3-pointers to start a personal 8-0 run.
Cyanne Coe followed suit with six-straight points of her own and the run was emphasized with an Izabela Nicoletti-Leite 3-pointer.
In all, the Stags shot nearly 70 percent in what turned out to be the decisive stretch, while holding the Gaels to just 14 percent shooting on their 14 attempts.
For the second-straight game, the Stags led from wire-to-wire and have now lead in all but five of the 80 minutes of conference play. Fairfield started the game with a 6-0 run but held off several Iona rallies.
The Gaels notched the first bucket of the second half just 10 seconds into the half, but the Stags held the Gaels off the scoreboard for the next six minutes while building their 17-0 run.
In her first game back since the season opener, Scott went 3-for-6 from long-range with back-to-back 3s in the second quarter to turn a one-point lead into a seven-point advantage.
With the win, the Stags are now one of two unbeaten teams in the MAAC and have started the conference campaign 4-0 for the third time in the last four seasons. Fairfield has won all four of their conference games by at least 15 points, with an average win of over 20.
L'Amoreaux led the passing effort with six assists while Coe controlled the boards with a team-high seven rebounds.
The Stags will look to keep that momentum when they host Marist on Saturday at 2pm at Leo D. Mahoney Arena.
