MANCHESTER, Conn. – In a match that saw four of six singles matches go to a third set, Fairfield University Women's Tennis was on the short side of a 4-3 decision against host UConn on Wednesday afternoon.
Victoria Mandma,
Nicolette Loeffler and
Lily Malinowski each earned a singles win in the contest.
"We played a very high-quality match today. It was a lot of fun getting to see our team compete at a high level this early in the season," said Head Coach
Jeff Bricker. "Matches like this will make us a better, tougher team. Congrats to Victoria, Nicolette and Lily for pulling out tough three-set wins."
Mandma's win came in the #1 singles spot, as the reigning MAAC Player of the Week remained unbeaten in spring singles action. Today, she rallied after dropping the first frame to take a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 final.
Loeffler earned victory in the #4 spot by a count of 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, and Malinowski finished off her opponent at #6 by a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
Anna Neyestani also went to a third set in her match at #2 singles, but it was UConn's Maria Constantinou who ultimately earned the point with a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4 triumph.
Fairfield Women's Tennis returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 1 for a trip to Newport to challenge the University of Rhode Island. The match will begin at 6:45 p.m. at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
