BUFFALO, N.Y. – It was an afternoon to remember for Fairfield University Women's Basketball Road Runner
Meghan Andersen. The sophomore poured in a career-high 34 points, dished out a personal-best five assists, and reached the 100 career 3-point milestone all while leading the Stags to a 97-51 victory over Canisius to close out the Western New York swing. The win improves the Stags' MAAC record to a perfect 7-0 and boosts their winning streak against conference opponents to 30-games dating back over 678 calendar days.
"Apparently she loves playing in Buffalo," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "She's shooting the ball great and shooting with confidence but I think where she's added elements to her game had gone off the bounce. It's allowed her to get more open looks because you have to respect her both inside and outside."
Andersen reached the 100 3-point milestone in an emphatic way by drilling seven trifectas, tying the second-most in a game in program history. Andersen becomes the 17th Stag all-time to reach triple figures in 3s and just the second sophomore.
The Stags (13-3, 7-0 MAAC) used a 17-3 run to open the second half to turn open up a 24-point lead. In total, the Stags would outscore Canisius 50-14 in the second half while holding the opposition to just five field goals and an even .200 field goal percentage.
"Our defense was definitely an emphasis at halftime," Coach Carly said. "I thought Canisius showed a lot more toughness than we did in the first half. They were all over the offensive boards and got to the free throw line. We really honed in on our defense keeping them to one and done and not putting them at the free throw line."
Fairfield would use a 31-5 scoring margin in the third quarter and a 19-9 margin in the fourth to take control of the game.
Andersen was not the only Stag to find success from 3-point land as
Izabela Nicoletti Leite dropped a season-high 15 points while going 3-for-5 from deep. She would also notch four assists to bring her career total to exactly 300.
Emina Selimovic was the other Stag in double figures as she finished with 12 points on a very efficient 6-for-7 from 2-point range.
In the two games in Western New York, the Stags averaged 96.5 points, shot 58 percent from the floor, and 47 percent from 3-point range. They won by an average of 46.5 points and held the program record in scoring margin in both games down to the final possession.
In her two games, Andersen averaged 27.0 points while shooting 65 percent from 3-point range (11-for-17).
The 97 points are tied for the 13th-most in a single game in program history and the most against a Division I opponent since 2002. It also marked the first time the Stags have reached 90 points in back-to-back games since Feb. 10-12, 1995.
Fairfield also tallied a season-high 27 assists, led by
Kaety L'Amoreaux's career-high tying seven helpers without a turnover. L'Amoreaux recorded seven assists in both wins in Western New York.
The Stags will look to keep the momentum going as they host Manhattan in their annual Kids' Day Out on Thursday at 11am at Leo D. Mahoney Arena.
