Binghamton Fends off Fairfield in Weekend Finale

Elliott leads the Stags with a dozen kills

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – In the final match for Fairfield University Volleyball at this weekend's Fairfield Invitational, the Stags came up short against visiting Binghamton in four sets on Saturday afternoon at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. Fairfield claimed the first set of the contest before falling to the America East foe by a count of 19-25, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-17.
 
With the loss, the Stags slip to 2-4 on the season. Binghamton evens its record at 3-3. The Bearcats will play Boston College at 6 p.m. this evening to crown the champion of the Fairfield Invitational.
 
Elliott posted a double-double with 14 digs in addition to her 12 kills. Mamie Krubally was Fairfield's most efficient hitter with a .321 attack percentage on her way to 11 finishers. The Stags were plagued by hitting errors – including nine Binghamton blocks – and finished at .161 as a unit on the day.
 
Abby Jandro and Blakely Montgomery shared setting duties and doled out 22 and 14 assists, respectively. Kyla Berg also distributed five assists from the libero spot.
 
Defensively, Berg set the pace in the back row with 19 digs. The graduate student continues to climb Fairfield's career charts as she surpassed Hall of Famer Joanne Saunders for 11th all-time with 1,260 career digs. Berg is currently 38 digs shy of matching Camille Coffey (1,298) to enter the all-time top 10.
 
Mikayla Haut chipped in 12 digs to go along with four kills.
 
At the net, Harlan Wyche was a force with a hand in six of the Stags' eight blocks. Elliott and Svenja Rodenbüsch each played a part in two rejections.
 
Rounding out the scoring, Elliott and Jandro both served up two aces.
 
Binghamton was led by 17 kills, 11 digs and three aces from Tsvetelina Ilieva. Ella Schabort added 13 kills on 31 errorless swings to hit a sizzling .419.
 
Another three-match weekend awaits the Stags as Fairfield takes part in the Yale Invitational. The Stags venture to New Haven to meet defending Patriot League Champion Colgate on Friday and reigning Ivy League winner Yale on Saturday before returning to Mahoney Arena on Sunday to host Villanova at 2 p.m.
