NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In a meeting of reigning conference champions at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, defending Patriot League Champ Colgate took a 3-1 decision from Fairfield University Volleyball, the incumbent champions of the MAAC.
Mamie Krubally paced the Stags with eight kills on Friday evening at the John J. Lee Amphitheater inside historic Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
Fairfield (2-5) won the opening set fueled by .351 hitting with no attack errors, but the Raiders (2-5) were the aggressors the rest of the way, hitting .313 for the match to take it by set scores of 19-25, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-8. The Stags were limited to a negative hitting percentage in two of the final three sets, finishing at .061 as a team in the contest.
In addition to her eight kills, Krubally had a hand in one of Fairfield's six team blocks.
Allie Elliott matched Krubally's 8.5 points, posting seven kills, one service ace and one block assist.
Maya Walker added six kills and two blocks, while
Mikayla Haut posted five kills, two blocks and an ace.
Emma Beretich was Fairfield's leader at the net with three rejections, including a solo block.
Abby Jandro and
Blakely Montgomery shared setting duties and distributed 16 and 15 assists, respectively.
In the back row,
Kyla Berg had a team-leading eight digs. Haut, Jandro and Montgomery added seven apiece, and Elliott had six.
Colgate was led by Abby Shadwick's 19 kills on .429 hitting. Frances Torres added 12 finished at a .500 clip for the Raiders.
Fairfield resumes action at the Yale Invitational on Saturday at 5 PM against another reigning conference champion – the Stags' fourth such opponent of the fall – in tournament host and Ivy League frontrunner Yale. The Bulldogs are 1-2 on the season entering their matchup with Villanova on Friday night at Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
