Fairfield Invitational Starts with Sweep of CCSU

The Stags hit .351 in the 3-0 victory

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball began action at the 2024 Fairfield Invitational with a convincing 3-0 sweep of CCSU at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The Stags hit .351 as a team against the Blue Devils, paced by 11 kills from Allie Elliott and nine finishers at a .571 clip from Maya Walker.
 
With their second straight win, the Stags even their 2024 record at 2-2. CCSU is still seeking its first win on the young campaign, dropping to 0-3. Fairfield took tonight's match by set scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-16.
 
Walker's nine kills on 14 attempts boosted her season hitting percentage to .453. She was one of four Fairfield hitters at .400 or better in today's contest. Janna Schlageter put down five kills on seven errorless attempts (.714), Harlan Wyche had four kills on seven swings (.429) and Emma Beretich had four on 10 tries without an error (.400).
 
On the outside, Elliott's 11 kills came courtesy of a .364 hitting percentage. She was the lone player to reach double digits in the contest. Mamie Krubally added eight kills from the right side, with the trio of Mikayla Haut, Svenja Rodenbüsch and Abby Jandro each contributing one.
 
Jandro and Blakely Montgomery shared setting duties and finished with 20 and 15 assists, respectively.
 
Defensively, Kyla Berg donned the libero jersey and picked up a match-leading 12 digs. Jandro added 11 to record her third double-double of the year, and Rodenbüsch added nine. Walker led the way at the net with a hand in three blocks, while Elliott, Wyche and Rodenbüsch each played a part in two of Fairfield's six rejections. All told, the Stags limited CCSU to a .165 hitting percentage.

The Blue Devils were paced by seven kills apiece from Lauren Milani and Weronika Poczynek.
 
Action continues at Mahoney Arena on Friday for Day 2 of the Fairfield Invitational. CCSU challenged Binghamton at 3 p.m. and the Stags will host Boston College at 6 p.m. The Eagles are 3-0 this fall with wins over Texas Tech, Eastern Kentucky and Iona last weekend in Chestnut Hill.
