Stags Win Sixth-Straight; Move to 3-0 in MAAC with Win at Niagara

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team extended their winning streak to six-straight matches and moved to a perfect 3-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a 4-1 road win over Niagara on Saturday afternoon. The Stags, who have been a perfectly balanced ship all season long, continued that trend with four different goal scorers as Sam Kersey, Caroline Kelly, Ashlyn Walsh, and Reagan Klarmann all touched net for the Stags.

"I thought it was a solid road performance," Head Coach David Barrett said. "After coming off an emotional win on Wednesday, you're always concerned about our response but we jumped on them quickly. We created a lot of shots but our finishing wasn't as sharp as it was in the second half. But we did what we needed to do to come away with a win on the road."

Fairfield's (8-1, 3-0 MAAC) six-match winning streak is the second time in the last three seasons the Stags have reached that mark. The streak is also tied for the third-longest in the nation behind only California and Colorado who have won seven-straight.

The Stags added four goals to the MAAC's best offense, putting them at 29 goals and 80 points, both ranking in the top-25 in Division I. Fairfield has accomplished this with a balanced attack that features 12 different goal scorers and eight different student-athletes with multiple scores.

The Stags jumped on Niagara earl, scoring their first tally just three minutes into the game when Kersey lined a shot from outside the box to the far post, beating the goalkeeper, and putting the Stags on the board. Fairfield would score twice more in the first half, starting with Kelly's rebounded shot in the 33rd minute and another long-range score from the foot of Walsh for her fifth goal of the year.

Klarmann completed the scoring as she got her own rebound off a penalty kick to put the score at 4-1.

Fairfield, who entered the match averaging a MAAC-best 18.7 shots per outing, took a season-high 36 attempts against the Purple Eagles. The Stags out-shot the home side 36-4 including a 21-2 margin with shots on goal. The Stags also took all nine corner kicks on the afternoon.

The Stags accomplished all of this on the offensive side against one of the best defenses in the conference. Fairfield scored four goals in the first 67 minutes against a Niagara side that had surrendered three goals all year in their first 630 minutes.

Fairfield will look to continue their momentum with another MAAC match next Saturday at Siena at 1pm.
